The Beloved Imperial Consort Chapter 71

Tang Yi Ru helplessly watched the imperial physician leave. She was so infuriated she threw away the porcelain pillow from the bed.

Charlatan. They were all charlatans! Looking at the bloody stain on the handkerchief, Tang Yi Ru’s heart was swallowed by terror.

Half a month ago, she has suddenly fainted in the courtyard. After waking up, she used the medicine. However, not only she didn’t get well, on the contrary, she became weak and feeble. Her whole body was covered by cold sweat and during the night she coughed incessantly. Now, she even started to cough up blood!

Two imperial physicians have diagnosed her. She drank medicine every day. Yet, there was no improvement in her illness.

The one who has just checked her pulse was already the third imperial physician. He, too, kept saying that her heart was distressed and that she has put too much tax on her mind. He only told her to properly use the medicine and recuperate with peace of mind.

Distressed heart and too much tax on her mind? She, Tang Yi Ru, was like a transparent person in this estate. What was there for her to be concerned about and exhaust her thoughts? It was clearly a severe illness!  A blood-coughing illness. How many people could pull through that? The hateful fact was there was actually no one who was able to diagnose it!

Tang Yi Ru had speculation. This inexplicable illness was, most likely, a poison! Unfortunately, she couldn’t count on the imperial physicians. The only one in this estate who was able to detect any clues was lady Qi.

Tang Hui Ru wanted to secretly harm her last time. She was able to escape only thanks to lady Qi’s wittiness. She didn’t know whether this time she will be also able to avoid her doom.

Tang Yi Ru hastily ordered people to go and ask for lady Qi. Yet, she waited and waited, but nobody came. In the end, a servant girl came to report that lady Qi has inadvertently caught a cold. She was currently on the bed rest and recuperating.

Tang Yi Ru looked coldly at lady Qi’s personal maidservant, wishing to throttle her. Very well. The pair of master and servant were actually treating her like a fool.

The previous few times it was a headache and a mild fever. This time, she has caught a cold. She didn’t know lady Qi was so sickly.

“Little sister is bed-ridden twice every three days1. Should big sister ask for the imperial physician to take a look at her?” Tang Yi Ru lifted the hanging screen and entered inside along with Shu Mei while looking at the woman on the bed whose expression has abruptly changed. She sneered.

Lady Qi didn’t expect Tang shufei would disregard her face and burst in. She immediately knew it was no good, that things were going to turn bad.

She has repeatedly rejected her visits and alienated her, making her angry. She now came to look for her trouble.

Lady Qi pulled out a stiff smile. She coughed weakly for few times, “This servant thanks for shufei’s concern. These are all small ailments. Nothing a recuperation won’t make better. There’s no need for the imperial physician.”

“We can’t drag the small ailments, can we?” Tang Yi Ru took lady Qi’s hand and looked straight into her eyes, “Or perhaps, little sister is not worried about touching a filthy thing?”

Lady Qi shook inside. She instantly understood that Tang Yi Ru became suspecting something.

No wonder she burst in so hastily and anxiously. Her life was at stake. She naturally won’t be able to sit still.

“That’s very kind of you to say so. This servant has been merely chilled by the wind. A little sweating will make this servant better.”

Regardless of whether Tang Yi Ru could ultimately obtain the clues, the information absolutely mustn’t come from her, otherwise, a disaster will befall her.

Lady Qi clenched her teeth and coped with Tang Yi Ru, playing it so well that not one drop of water could leak out2. However, her heart squeezed tightly.

Not understanding the facts, the terror of never knowing the truth. Just like the present Tang Yi Ru. She still suspected some woman wanted to hurt her. Lady Qi looked at Tang Yi Ru’s panicked heart that was forcefully suppressed under her cool facade. All of a sudden, she felt a desolateness of a fox who grieved fort rabbit’s death3.

Although she understood that the reason why Tang Yi Ru would incur upon herself such a calamity was certainly because she has violated his Highness’s taboo, however, she was still terrified inside the heart. His sixth Highness had turned a blind eye to women in the inner yard. He did not pity them at all. Now, he has even hardened his heart. Perhaps, in the entire inner yard, only that one from Danruo Courtyard was able to make his heart soften and carry her in his mind.

The more lady Qi thought the more saddened she became. Suddenly, she felt that none of her previous wishful thinkings could compare to living well. Contentedly living in her courtyard was always better than to end up dead like the woman in front of her.

Tang Yi Ru exerted all the possible tricks, yet she was unable to get any information from lady Qi. Seeing her play the fool even when she hinted at her, she could only go back with a cold face.

Since then, Tang Yi Ru’s condition has become worse and worse. In the end, she coughed up blood each day, unable to get out of bed.

In Danruo Courtyard, Mu Xi Yao has heard that Tang Yi Ru has again punished servant girls. She inwardly shook her head. That woman behaved more and more foolish as time went.

Tang Yi Ru naturally knew that it was bad this time. After venting restlessly her emotions these days, she was occasionally able to cool down and think deeply after which she would faintly detect some clues.

This strange illness was, she was afraid, to some extent related to that night that has made her disturbed for a long time.

In the end, she didn’t manage to break herself away from Tang Hui Ru’s calculation? Whose hand did she borrow to hurt her?

Lying on the bed, Tang Yi Ru gazed at the flickering candle outside the veil. Her expression gradually became dazed.

If she hasn’t let go of her older di sister’s hand at the bank of Wei Shui pond that year, how would things look now?

Inside Danruo Courtyard, Zhong Zheng Lin took Mu Xi Yao’s hand and was about to settle down. However, he saw Zhao momo hastily come to report that shufei from Shuhui Courtyard was in poor health. She forcibly hung in there, seeking to see his Highness and cefei.

Zhong Zheng Lin’s expression was cold. He took the cloak passed by Mo Lan and draped it over Mu Xi Yao’s shoulders. Afterward, he gave her the hand stove so that she could cover her hands with it. Only then did he go over with her.

The woman lying flatly on the bed had a wretched appearance. Her expression was haggard.

“Your Highness.” It was already difficult for Tang Yi Ru to speak out. She has only called the man, yet her breathing was already disarrayed.

“Qie…is able to see your Highness in the end.” As soon as the words were said, tears rolled down from Tang Yi Ru’s eyes. The man standing in front of her was the only person she ever loved. Yet, she was never able to get close to him.

“Why is your Highness not willing to take a bit more pity on qie? The way your Highness treats qie cannot compare to one in a thousandth of how your Highness treats cefei.” The woman with short-breath looked mournful. Her face was a mask of pain. She looked straight at Zhong Zheng Lin. Her eyes never shifted.

Seeing her want to get the answer at all costs, Mu Xi Yao only felt there was nothing more foolish in this world than this.

Mu Xi Yao from the previous life was like this. Tang Yi Ru of this lifetime was also like this.

From start to finish, Zhong Zheng Lin didn’t give Tang Yi Ru a glance. He stood there with his hand held behind the back, his eyes were placed on the bauhinia inside the room.

“Bendian’s shufei is the first miss of Tang House. What does it have to do with you?” Zhong Zheng Lin’s voice was neither too fast nor too slow. But to Tang Yi Ru, it was as if she has been, in a split second, struck by lightning, making her collapse on the bed.

The imperial physician waiting outside quickly went in to apply needles. Chaos erupted inside the room.

Zhong Zheng Lin didn’t wait for the imperial physician’s report. He directly took Mu Xi Yao’s hand and went back.

Holding the little woman’s soft body, Zhong Zheng Lin finally felt more comfortable.

Tang House taught their daughters well. Both of them were ridiculous. Fortunately, there was Mu Xi Yao who was all he wished for. Otherwise, just these women of inner yard, they were simply all unbearable.

Mu Xi Yao’s little face rubbed against Zhong Zheng Lin’s chest. She found a cozy position and fell asleep on her own.

On the afternoon of the following day, news about Tang shufei passing away spread out from Shuhui Courtyard.

Since shufei passed away, the imperial prince’s estate has dispatched people to send the message to Tang House.

When sir Tang received the news, he immediately rushed to the prince’s estate from the Ministry of Revenue. However, a quarter an hour later, he came out with a pale complexion and swayingly exited the entrance.

Earlier on, madam Tang has learned that her daughter was gone. Her eyes were already red and swollen from crying. Seeing him return to the estate, she threw herself on him and wailed till her heart was going to tear and lungs were going to split.

“Yu Zhi, this matter cannot be mentioned anymore. Otherwise, a great calamity will befall upon us.” Sir Tang, looking at his wife’s crazed appearance and soundly questioning, could only endure the great pain in his heart and comfort her over and over again.

He had two sons and three daughters. Now, two of his three daughters were gone and the whereabouts of the remaining one was unknown. When people reached their middle age, how can they not be pained to see their daughters successively pass away before them?

If it wasn’t for Qin Ru’s obsession, risking her life to assume other’s name and place, there won’t be today’s tragedy.

Recalling how has his Highness thrown before him the letter personally written by Tang Hui Ru with a cold face, sir Tang felt remorse and shame. Tears coursed down from his aged eyes. It was all him. He didn’t educate his daughters well. He didn’t educate his daughters well!

Wait what? There was a body switching going on? I’m really curious on what was on the letter 😩 thanks for the translate

Do I understand it right, that Tang Yi Ru, let her sister die to marry the prince? I thought she was personal picked by the mother. That makes no sense to me. Can someone explain? And why was she killed, because she lied about her Identity? Why did she do it in first place? There seems to be no need to do it.

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

I think it was like this: TYR’s elder sister was the one supposed to marry the sixth prince. However, since TYR herself was obsessed with ZZL she killed her elder sister when she got the chance and then somehow persuaded her parents to let her take her sister’s identity and marry ZZL.

THR (since they’re family) knew about this identity swapping, thus she wasn’t afraid of TYR and even threatened her about it (when she wanted to marry ZZL too).

And then, the reason why TYR was killed. I think it has something to do with her killing her sister to gain her identity and viciousness (killing one sister and then attempting to kill the other one). If she was left in the inner yard, there would be a bloody struggle going on.

Hope it somehow makes it easier to understand 😉

    • LAE | 8th Sep 19

My guess is that if it was found out that that the daughter from the Tang family was killed before she could marry the Prince, it would be considered an insult to the royal family, so the Tang family sent a replacement in order to protect their lives and reputation

  3. iRead4Fun | 27th Jul 19

Whoa! So this Tang Shufei is actually the younger sister assuming the older sister’s identity just so she can marry into ZZL’s household? How in the hell are these barely teenage girls able to scheme so maliciously? (The things I worried about in those years was how to take away my younger brothers’ toys without getting found out. 😈)
Or did I read that wrong? Gah! 🧐😖

I want more Chen Qing and snusnu!!! And oh… the primary wife’s entry soon too! 😫

Thanks for the chapter, Summer! 😁

      You’re welcome, iRead4Fun ^^

Yup. It’s exactly what you think.

But honestly, these ancient people mature so soon! At most, I can only imagine myself putting a diarrhea pill into my enemy’s beverage or food (okay, this ain’t nice thing to do). Killing your own sister only to marry your…brother-in-law? is really too much. How heartless or maddened you must be to do such an atrocious thing? What’s more, in the end, she still didn’t get what she wanted…..

Okay, I will go to watch some cute fluffy clips/dramas to appease my little heart ^o^

    • ASOI | 24th Mar 21

In a way, I could sympathize. These girls had zero control over their lives, let alone their marriages. Their parents decided everything for them, completely. Males get more of a choice. So they have to concoct all these schemes in the dark to get what they what. It’s their form of “control.”

To us, who are comfortable in the modern world, it’s vicious af. For them, it’s literally their lives on the line if they can’t get a good marriage. So, even though it was her sister, she schemed against her to take what she saw as a good marriage/life for herself. Also, remember how callously they treat servants’ lives back then. It’s one simple step away from thinking another person’s life is meaningless.

  6. Nofriyana | 27th Jul 19

    Memangnya isi suratnya apa ya?

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

I think THR wrote in the letter all the sins TYR committed (like how she killed her sister to assume her identity).

  7. Lonely | 27th Jul 19

Holy shit!! For a second I felt like I missed something, got confused. So what the shu daughter had on Tang Shufei was this. Then what about the dead mans body that was mentioned in the previous chapter? Also did Tang Shifei kill her older sister?

Also shouldn’t Tang Shifei have expected her little sister would have sold out her secret since she threw her out of the Prince Fu?

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

You can say she killed her sister as she let go of her hand and let her drown in the lake. Also, Tang shufei knew well THR’s personality, thus she knew THR was like a time bomb that would explode at any time. Before, THR was restrained by her family and in case she married, TYR would have no worry of her leaking the secret (it was word against a words I think). Moreover, if she really did it (sell her out), THR will be also affected. TYR committed a treason of lying to imperial family. Hence if it was revealed, the life of their whole family would be at stake.

However, everything changed once THR became ZZL’s concubine. Since she was as crazed as TYR, she was more like a time bomb that would explode at any time. Plus, the constant threats and provocations from her side made TYR eventually snap which resulted in her wanting to remove her later on.

  8. Abe | 27th Jul 19

Now I’m curious about that Qin Ru person. Is that the first daughter?

Meanwhile MXY is living well and sleeping well. Ah the privilege of being the only woman loved by ZZL.

    Thanks for the chapter!

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

      You’re welcome, Abe ^^

Tang Yi Ru is actually Tang Qin Ru. Tang Yi Ru is her elder sister who was supposed to marry ZZL. Since she took her identity, she became TYR.

      • Ejsama | 31st Jul 19

Oh. No we know why ” she” Tang shi was a year early in the selection! I wonder what changed the timeline tho?

        • Summer | 31st Jul 19

          Maybe the butterfly effect?

  9. Kayame | 27th Jul 19

    Thanks for the update!
I’m curious as to what was written in that letter.

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

      You’re welcome, Kayame ^^

I think the letter contained sins TYR has committed.

  10. Yuraine | 28th Jul 19

    Thank you for updating!!!

Oh wow, a father admiting that he didn’t educate his daughters well. That’s a first.

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

      You’re welcome, Yuraine ^^

Yup. His greed made all of his three daughters end up tragically.

  11. Aki | 28th Jul 19

It was well deserved. Although it was interesting to see how the Tang family reacted and blamed themselves instead of others.

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

Yup. It’s kind of refreshing to see such a reaction as usually there are only endless blames of others.

  12. SolivagantSheep | 28th Jul 19

Wait, so who we thought was the di daughter wasn’t? She killed her and took her place and just lived like that? I’m really bad at remembering names so having the two Tang girls in one house always really confused me so I might totally be missing the point here, but that’s legit what it sounds like. That’s cold blooded.
Thanks for the chapter! I want to see Lady Qi getting along with Mu Xi Yao, I feel like she’s rational enough to know what not to cover and would priorize her standard of living over court intrigue. A good Ally for Mu Xi Yao.

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

      You’re welcome, SolivagantSheep ^^

Chinese names are sometimes really confusing to be honest. But, you got it totally righ 👍

  13. mochimochi | 28th Jul 19

EH?!!!! So Tang Yi Ru isn’t Tang Yi Ru all this time?!!!! Whadeheck I’m perplexed. But yay less woman in the inner yard of ZZL hehe.
Aw I was hoping the snusnu continues from last chapter. Alas…😂😂😂

Thank you for the update!!!!!!!! I love this story so much I’m rereading it for the third times already despite today being only the 4th day I started to read this ahahaha

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

      You’re welcome, mochimochi ^^

I’m so happy to hear you love this story as far XD

Though, some of the women are gone in ZZL’s inner yard, more are coming in the future, lol.

      • mochimochi | 28th Jul 19

Nuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. Ugh I should always remember the synopsis. It says MXY will only become the most favoured imperial consort, not the queen. I guess that’s more realistic than being the queen and only one in the inner yard of an emperor for transmigration stories. But I still can’t help be disappointed :'(

At least give us more snusnu and MXY being her quirky self even as an imperial consort pwishhh

  14. Midnightsonata4 u | 28th Jul 19

    Hello, thanks for the chapter!
I got confused 😆 Can someone tell me what tang yi ru’s secret? She was not the real daughter?

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

      You’re welcome, Midnightsonata4 u ^^

Tang Yi Ru’s biggest secret is that she’s not the real TYR. She has assumed the identity of her elder sister. In fact, she’s the second miss of Tang House, Tang Qin Ru.

  15. Anasthesia | 28th Jul 19

Wait, my little mind doesn’t get it. Did Tang Yi Ru assume one of her sister’s identity just so she could enter ZZL’s inner courtyard? No wonder ZZL specifically said ‘the first miss’ of the Tang house. If that’s the case, where’s the first miss? Please don’t tell me MXY has still one rival waiting in the shadows QAQ

But dang, ZZL is so cold. This splashed me with cold water, letting me realize that although MXY’s position seems stable, if she changes in some way that ZZL didn’t like, all their past affections would turn into popped bubbles. If MXY wasn’t so good at charming a man’s heart, will she be able to hook ZZL so thoroughly? Modern sister, hang in there~ Well, there’s the spoiler aka synopsis that she will be a beloved guifei, so I guess my concerns were for nothing. Sorry for my comment being so long, Summer >~< And thanks for the chappie!

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

      You’re welcome Anasthesia ^^

and don’t worry about long comments, I like to read them very much haha.

MXY needn’t to worry about another Tang miss rival as they are all gone. The first miss (real Tang Yi Ru) was killed by her sister (fake Tang Yi Ru) when she let go of her hand and let her drown in the lake. Since, fake TYR was in love with ZZL, she has later assumed her elder sister’s identity and married ZZL as his shufei.

Well, if ZZL wasn’t the male lead here and there wasn’t present MXY to soften him, I would call him a ruthless and calculative asshole (see his previous life where he lived up to his assholeness). That’s, I think, why MXY won’t mindlessly fall in love with him (there are too many bad examples for her like what would happen with her if she fell in love with such man – the previous MXY, TYR, THR,etc.)

Okay, hope I didn’t make you disillusioned with ZZL and make you hate him (as it isn’t my intention) 😛

      • Anasthesia | 29th Jul 19

No, I still like him as a person. It actually makes him kind of 3D as a character, lol. Yeah, I do agree with MXY’s decision to keep her heart closed. ZZL might want her to be thoroughly his, but that’s just his selfishness, so let’s just ignore that. Who told him to fall thoroughly into MXY’s trap and love her so much, amiright? XD

        • Summer | 29th Jul 19

Exactly! He reaps what he sowed, lol

  16. thesilentdarkangel | 28th Jul 19

Woah… that last bit of lamentations from the father…

Does it mean that Tang Yiru was an impostor?
    Σ(っ゚Д゚;)っ

Thank you for the chapter! 💖👍👍👍

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

      You’re welcome, thesilentdarkangel ^^

Yup. This TYR was an impostor!

  17. humbledaisy | 28th Jul 19

Sometimes, these foolish girls need only a little rope to catch themselves. I think I would be the one who just shook their head and lived quietly. Thanks for the chapter!

    • Summer | 28th Jul 19

      You’re welcome, humbledaisy ^^

Life is sometimes merciless, but you choose your own path. In this case, they’ve chosen wrongly 😔

  18. Karra | 30th Jul 19

Whoa, I never expected TYR would turn out to be so twisted. I actually though her sister was more problematic than her. Their parents truly must have failed in their education since both of them seemed ehm unique. But I feel sad for the parents since they are not trying to blame others and know their wrong – or at least the father.

So did she kill her older sister before or after selection? Wouldn’t ZZLs mother see the difference?

    • Summer | 30th Jul 19

Yup. But, on the other side, when you think of it, her father agreed with her plan. Thus, he’s not as innocent as he may seem.

Hmm. In early chapters it was written that TYR didn’t participate on selections because she has “fallen sick”. Thus, consort Shu has probably not seen her and she was only bestowed marriage because of her father’s ranks and her family background? I also guess it was most likely at that time that she had killed her sister. Wow. How obsessed she must have been of ZZL to do such a twisted and horrible thing!

  19. Train | 31st Jul 19

Why did it say the remaining daughter’s whereabout is unknown? Didn’t he read the letter ZZL gave him? I presumed the THR wrote about her sister’s death or perhaps only the swapping? 🤔

    • Summer | 31st Jul 19

By the remaining daughter, he meant Tang Hui Ru, little lady Tang who has been saved by wandering swordman and her whereabouts where unknown.

  20. Ejsama | 31st Jul 19

Also I think the diagram should be reedited? Since TYR (original) was the actual ZZL’s concubine in past life.MXY mentioned somewhere how TYR(TQR)’s so different from the past life time (not steady and easily angered). TQR also joined the selection with MXY, not a year later. Many things changed in the timeline which are not really mentioned like the Emperor’s concubine death which was suppoosed to happen in the near future not in the present.

    • Summer | 31st Jul 19

The diagram is actually made by one of the readers. So, sometimes information may not be that accurate.

  21. Su Jeong | 9th Aug 19

Thank you so much for the chapter Summer.
I just want to ask, can you tell me the exact chapter the principal wife is going to arrive? I’m waiting to see the drama that is sure to erupt.

    • Summer | 10th Aug 19

      You’re welcome, Su Jeong ^^

I think it’s on chapter 80-81. It’s a very important chapter as it presents a turning point in the relationship of both main protagonists.

  22. LAE | 8th Sep 19

Does anyone remember how the MC kept noticing that Lady Tang in this life is different from her previous life. Could it be that in the original timeline the daughter swap didn’t happen, so the true eldest daughter married the prince?

    • Summer | 8th Sep 19

I think it’s highly probable. Maybe the one in previous life was truly her older sister. Hence, the one who was ZZL’s favorite consort and had an iron hand was actually her sister, the true TYR. It’s actually credible since many things changed in this life (her sister becoming ZZM’s shufei, Jiang cefei from previous life failing to enter ZZL’s inner yard, DWYZ becoming ZZL’s advisor from the star, etc.).

      EDIT:
On the other hand, after a deeper thinking, TYR’s face surely didn’t change, right? So, that being the case, if MXY saw her in previous life, she surely couldn’t recognize wrong the person, right? If TYR wasn’t the one from previous life (as her face was different), she should know of it. Ahhh. I’m really confused about this matter now.

  23. Saraf | 20th Mar 20

Tang Qin Ru, we know what would’ve happened if you hadn’t let go of Tang Yi Ru’s hand. She would have only caught severe cold n be delayed one year from entering ZZL’s inner yard and become his “most favored” consort. Since this story is from MXY n ZZL’s point of view, many deep schemes can only be guessed by readers from small hidden clues. Already quite a few things are different from MXY’s previous life, be it from her own intervention or something else.

Thank you so much for the translation dear 😊😊😊

    • Summer | 23rd Mar 20

      You’re so welcome, Saraf ^^

I guess this is what people call butterfly effect. MXY’s existence alone has deviated many things from their original course.

  24. GiL | 18th Jan 21

What a life?! Tsk..tsk.. Thanks for the chapter

  25. Hua | 24th Jun 24

Everything kind of makes sense now, TYR is so different from the previous life because she isn’t the previous life’s TYR. I’m not worried about why the fl didn’t recognize this. The Tang sisters that swapped were from the same biological mother since both were di daughters, they must have been very similar looking. MXY is also transmigrated, and the original souls memories of TYR was more about her bearing and character than the exact facial features. The original MXY was also just a concubine, not even a shufei. She probably hadn’t interacted that closely with TYR and she was also suffering from many child deaths’ and miscarriages, she would’ve been confined to her rooms a lot.
