Synopsis
Princess Xi Zhen with an extraordinary enchanting appearance had the beauty that could topple countries.
The crown prince regarded her as his private possession.
The emperor saw her as a chess piece and wanted to use her as a bait to incite dispute between vassal kings.
The empress considered her as a calamity and only wanted to marry her off[1] to Mongolia.
The person she liked, in an attempt to seize the ultimate supremacy, ascended to the throne and changed the dynasty. She was designed to be the new empress, becoming the only one to receive the sovereign’s favor.
[1] Marry off in this context mean he qing – literally a peace marriage, which was a diplomatic practice in ancient China that went by marrying off ‘a princess’ to a chieftain or ruler of an aggressive barbarian neighboring state. The political marriage was expected to appease the chieftain, who, in return, would cease his aggression in the next few years.
Review
This story revolves around Zhu Yi who, after losing her parents, was adopted by the imperial family (her only remaining family are her paternal aunt noble consort Tong and little cousin Zhu Xiu Li). As Zhu Yi grows, she gradually turns into an alluring beauty. This of course attracts a lot of unwanted attention for her – especially from her “brother” the crown prince who slowly starts to develop immoral feelings toward her (immoral as he mostly sees her as his future sexual plaything) and the Emperor who wants to use her for his own personal gain.
Before the beginning of the story line, the main lead falls for Xie Ying, the heir apparent to the vassal king. Unfortunately, just as she mustered up her courage and confessed to him, he rejected her. Since then, she purposely kept a distance between them and avoided him most of the time.
Just as she thought that it will continue like this, her aunt noble consort Tong wants her to get close to Xie Ying and even seduce him! In a time of chaos and where one could not control his/her fate, what will Zhu Yi do? Will she listen to her aunt or will she stand up for herself?

I just finished MTLing this TWICE. And now, I’m planning to read it once again. I love it so much. The couple here is probably the best couple I’ve come across with in terms of sizzzzling chemistry. So hot and so fluffy at the same time.
